FAREHAM & DISTRICT BEEKEEPERS ASSOCIATION
ANNUAL HONEY SHOW 7 NOVEMBER 2009
SHOW REPORT
I am delighted to report that the 2009 honey show was a great success. We had 119 entries, not as many as last year, but enough to enable us to award the Blue Ribbon. It was an excellent effort, given the terrible year for hive losses, bad weather and low honey yields. So well done to everyone!
It was my second year as a steward for our very knowledgeable judge for honey and wax, David Sandwell. He is extremely fastidious with his judging, taking great care with his examination and tasting of all exhibits. He misses nothing! All sticky marks on jars, dents, rusty or mismatched lids, bits floating, air bubbles and even the odd bit of wax is picked up under the glare of his torchlight! Yet again he was impressed by the standard of our members’ entries and was quick to write encouraging remarks on the entry cards. He kindly stayed on and was very happy to answer questions and pass on tips on honey showing which I know members found very useful.
I must also thank Jean Powell and Jo Booth, who were confectionery judge and steward respectively. Jean commented that the entries in the Hampshire honey cake section were all cracked on the top and wondered if the recipe suggested too hot an oven. This is something we must investigate before next year.
A special thank you to Gwen Butcher, our show secretary for organising the show and liaising with Fareham Horticultural Society, and to everyone who helped to set up and dismantle the stands. Finally, I have to thank Mike Alsop, who now seems to be our official photographer, for the fantastic photographs he took and so promptly put on our website. I urge everyone to have a look!
It was lovely to see the enthusiasm of some of our new members and their joy at winning. That’s what makes our show so special and so enjoyable.
Good luck to everyone for 2010, may all our bees survive the winter and we have a bumper show next year!
